Are you a writer who has problems coming up with names for your drafts? Well, I was for a while. Then the names I was coming up with were cool and interesting, and I was getting comments from my friends about them.
Here are 5 tips to help you come up with names for your stories.
Tip 5: Keep a notebook close.
I've found that if you keep a notebook around that it slowly fills up with things that hit you when you weren't expecting it. Many of my ideas for future chapters came when I was walking, working, or just sitting around reading a book.
Notebooks come in many shapes, sizes, colors, and texture, so picking one out can be fun.
If you can't carry a notebook around with you everywhere, many phones have note apps which are work too.
Tip 4: Funky Words.
Heard any words lately that sounded silly, or was just an unexpected thing to hear? Well of course you have!
You could even use the word gadzooks as a name, which sounds like a name for a character that is a goofball, or a circus filled with clowns.
Or you could use tip 3 to make into a name like this... Zodkogas(😂)
Tip 3: Be a Tornado.
Being a tornado can be quite fun if you know how to do it correctly(Not me 😜)
A bunch of my characters, places, and such were made using this technique.
When you twist a word, that means that you scramble the word you've chosen and then replace some of the letters with ones that make it more extravagant. Here's an example: Christopher Paolini's Eragon. It's about a boy named Eragon, who is a Dragon rider.
Look closely at Eragon and Dragon.
Notice anything? He replaced the D with an E, which is right after D in the alphabet.
And Eragon the character was born.(Don't know if he meant to do that though...)
Tip 2: AI and Baby Name Generators
Online you can find plenty of name generators. You could find a name generator specified for the type of creature or place it is, or just go scrolling through long names of baby names.
Either way works. It's probably not the best idea to go continually scrolling through names for inspiration(even though it's fun..).
My favorite generator website is: https://blog.reedsy.com/character-name-generator/
Tip 1: Use the brain that God gave you!
This is the most important tip of all, so pay attention!
This tip I shouldn't even have to tell you to use it but here I am. If you are a follower of Jesus, then you probably are already doing it. If not, repent and follow Jesus!
Using your imagination aka your brain is important. With that brainpower, God is using you to write an impacting story with exciting character for His Glory.
This is why it is important.
